NHS Greater Manchester public consultations: adult cardiac surgery and vascular surgery services
The two consultations are:
- Proposed changes to adult cardiac surgery services
- Proposed changes to vascular surgery services
While both consultations are running at the same time, they are separate consultations covering different services and proposals. Feedback will be considered independently for each consultation before any decisions are made.
Both consultations are now open and will run until Tuesday 22 September 2026.
Proposed Changes to Adult Cardiac Surgery Services
NHS Greater Manchester is consulting on a proposal to make Wythenshawe Hospital the single specialist cardiac surgery centre for patients across Greater Manchester and East Cheshire. The service has already been operating in this way for emergency cardiac surgery since 2021 and for planned surgery during 2025 due to specialist workforce challenges.
Under the proposal, surgery would take place at Wythenshawe Hospital, while follow-up appointments and routine checks would continue to be provided closer to patients’ homes. NHS Greater Manchester says the change could help improve patient outcomes, reduce waiting times and ensure services remain sustainable for the future.
Proposed Changes to Vascular Surgery Services
NHS Greater Manchester is also seeking feedback on plans for the future of specialist vascular surgery services, which currently operate from The Royal Oldham Hospital and Manchester Royal Infirmary.
Vascular services treat conditions affecting blood vessels, including those that can lead to serious illness, stroke and limb loss. NHS Greater Manchester says growing demand, increasingly complex patient needs, workforce pressures and changing national standards mean it is important to review how these services are delivered in the future.
The proposed changes aim to improve patient safety and outcomes, reduce variation in care, and ensure specialist vascular services remain sustainable while providing care as close to home as possible where appropriate.
NHS Greater Manchester wants to hear from anyone who may be affected by these proposals, including patients, carers, families, staff members and local residents. Feedback gathered through the consultations will help inform future decisions.
