Prescriptions follow up project report

Healthwatch Bury has published the findings of a short engagement exercise focused on prescription services in the Bury North area.

The engagement, conducted between March and July 2025, gathered 41 responses through community visits, focus groups, and surveys. This snapshot builds on Healthwatch Bury’s earlier research, which highlighted systemic issues such as communication breakdowns, prescription delays, and challenges with digital tools like the NHS App.

Key Findings

  • Communication gaps remain: Patients reported unclear updates on prescription changes, leading to confusion and near-missed doses.
  • Pharmacy delays persist: Stock shortages and supply chain issues continue to affect timely access to medication.
  • Digital barriers: While 40% of respondents use the NHS App for repeat prescriptions, 33% do not, often due to complex login processes or accessibility challenges.
  • Accessibility concerns: Individuals with aphasia and other impairments struggle with digital tools, relying heavily on carers and preferring traditional communication methods.
  • Medication reviews: Awareness of their importance remains low, with only 53% reporting a good understanding.
