GP Access in Bury

During 2017/18, GP Practices represented one of the most common areas the people of Bury were talking to Healthwatch Bury about.

A significant proportion of this feedback related to the experiences in accessing an appointment with a GP. In response to public feedback, we met with a number of local community based groups and produced an online survey to understand people’s experiences of accessing an appointment with a GP in Bury. 350 people completed the survey.

The survey looked at several aspects of a GP practice such as: accessing non-urgent and urgent appointments; telephone contact and online communication with GP practice; medical reception staff and opening hours.

They found the majority of patients were satisfied with their experience. However, results from the survey show that there needs to be further communication with patients about new services to improve awareness and understanding.

Healthwatch made several recommendations, mainly about improving awareness and communication, and collaborating with other partners. This report contains no service provider response.
