No Space for Racism in Health and Care – Greater Manchester Takes a Stand
The ‘No Space for Racism’ campaign features a powerful video, with the staff featured, including a GP, surgeons, a paramedic, social care worker and nursing assistant, describing the impact racism has had on their wellbeing, confidence and daily lives.
Around 1 in 4 health and care staff in Greater Manchester have reported that they have experienced racism at work in the past year. This includes racist words, insults, being ignored or left out, being threatened and sometimes even violence. It is coming from the patients they are trying to care for, patients’ family and friends and even other members of staff.
A key aim of the campaign is to encourage members of the public to become active bystanders and stand up to racism. Even small actions can make a difference. Step in if it’s safe to do so, check in with the person affected, report it – all of these send a clear message – racism is not okay.
The campaign website provides practical advice on how to respond safely and effectively.
