Know where to get NHS help this August Bank holiday

With some GP practices, pharmacies and other NHS services operating different opening hours over the long weekend, being prepared can help you access the right care quickly and avoid unnecessary stress. 

Check Your Medication Before the Weekend

NHS 111 regularly experiences an increase in calls during bank holidays from people who have run out of their prescribed medicines. To avoid disruption to your treatment, make sure you order and collect any medication you may need before the weekend begins. 

Your Local Pharmacy Can Help

Community pharmacies are often the quickest place to get advice and treatment for many minor illnesses and health concerns.

Under the Pharmacy First service, pharmacists can assess and provide treatment for a range of common conditions, including:

• Sore throats
• Earache
• Shingles
• Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs)

They can also offer advice on coughs, colds, stomach upsets and other everyday health issues. No appointment is needed. 

Use NHS 111 for Advice

If you are unsure which service is right for you, visit NHS 111 online or call 111. Trained advisors can assess your symptoms and direct you to the most appropriate service. 

Urgent mental health support

Call NHS 111 and select the mental health option if you, or someone you know, is in a mental health crisis. Available 24/7, you’ll speak to a mental health professional who can help you find the right support.

If there’s an immediate risk to life ring 999 or go to A&E.

Urgent Dental Care

For urgent dental problems when your regular dentist is unavailable, contact Greater Manchester Urgent Dental Care on 0333 332 3800. The service is available every day from 8am to 10pm, including weekends and bank holidays. Charges may apply. 

Urgent Eye Care

Anyone experiencing sudden changes to their vision, painful or red eyes, or new flashes and floaters should contact a participating optician through Greater Manchester's Urgent Eye Care Service before attending in person. 

Stay Safe in the Summer Heat

With warm weather expected, residents are also encouraged to look after themselves by:

• Drinking plenty of water
• Spending time in the shade
• Wearing lightweight clothing
• Avoiding strenuous activity during the hottest part of the day

These simple steps can help prevent heat-related illness. 

In an Emergency, Call 999

For life-threatening emergencies such as a heart attack, stroke or serious accident, always call 999 immediately or attend the nearest Emergency Department.
