Measles Information
Measles is an infection that spreads very easily and can cause serious problems in some people. Having the MMR vaccine is the best way to prevent it.
Vaccination is the best way to protect your child
Check your child’s red book/ask your GP practice if you think your child has not had all theirs.
If you have not been vaccinated you can protect your child and others by getting it done, speak to your GP practice if you are not sure.
Check if you or your child has measles
Measles usually starts with cold-like symptoms, followed by a rash a few days later. Some people may also get small spots in their mouth.
Cold-like symptoms
The first symptoms of measles include:
- a high temperature
- a runny or blocked nose
- sneezing
- a cough
- red, sore, watery eyes
- Spots in the mouth
- The measles rash

If you think your child may have measles keep them at home. Contact your GP or NHS111 for advice – to help stop it spreading phone ahead before taking your child to see a health professional.
MMR vaccinations - Catch up clinics
Bury has had recent confirmed cases of measles. It is also common in many other countries that are common holiday destinations. Measles is a highly contagious viral infection which can have serious consequences.
The catch-up clinics are running through July 2023 for anyone aged 1 to 18 who has missed a dose of the MMR vaccine for any reason. If you’re not sure if your child has missed an MMR vaccine you can check with your GP practice. GP practices and the Bury GP Federation will also be contacting parents of children whose medical records show they’ve missed an MMR dose.
Vaccines without porcine gelatin are available. If you would prefer a vaccine without porcine gelatin please let the clinic know.
