What is Public Involvement in research?

Patient and Public Involvement, or PPIE, is an activity that connects people with research. Through a range of activities, we work with people and patients to inform, discuss, listen, and make decisions about our research. As a public contributor you would play a vital role in clinical research and through PPIE activities you can help to improve treatments and outcomes for future patients

About the Rapid Learning Project

Radiotherapy uses radiation beams to destroy cancer cells. These beams must pass through healthy tissues to reach the cancer. This can cause side-effects for patients as the healthy tissues can be damaged as well. New research shows that giving radiation to the top of the heart can cause early death when treating lung cancer patients. Researchers from The Christie Hospital NHS Foundation Trust are working with team members from the University of Manchester. Together we want to improve radiotherapy treatments for lung cancer patients to avoid this area of the heart and to increase survival after radiotherapy.

What's involved?

Your views and experiences are vital to help patients have better outcomes. You don’t need any previous experience of health research to take part, just be happy to learn and share your views. The citizens jury will take place on the 11th and 12th May for a few hours each day and people  will be paid £25 per hour for attending meetings.

If you are interested please email Zahra on zahra.arain@mft.nhs.uk as soon as possible to arrange a call and more information.
