Mirena Coil: Licence Extended to 8 Years for Contraception

Changes to the Mirena licence - How does this affect you?
Sexual health and HRT

Mirena can now be used for up to 8 years for contraception, instead of the previous 5‑year limit.

People who have a Mirena coil for contraception now have extended protection and can keep it in place for up to 8 years. This doesn’t mean it must stay in for the full 8 years. If someone experiences side effects, or if their contraceptive needs change, they can choose to have it removed at any time.

Removal can be arranged through the patient’s registered GP practice or at a local sexual health clinic.

It’s important to note that this change applies to contraception only. There has been no extension to the licensed duration when Mirena is used for:

  • Heavy menstrual bleeding (HMB) – still licensed for 5 years
  • Endometrial protection as part of HRT – still licensed for 4–5 years depending on guidance

See The Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (FSRH) statement below.

If you are using the coil for part of HRT, then guidance remains the same and it should be replaced after 5 years of use.
